The Ratties!

My daughter has 12 pet rats who are so much fun, so cute, and so smart, that I decided to include their pictures here.
Did you know that rats make the a great small animal pet?
They do not bite.
They are smart and enjoy interacting with people.
They are very social and clean.

When Elyssa first became interested in considering a rat for a pet, we asked about rats at a local feed store.  They happened to have some rats, so an employee picked one up and set it on my daughter's chest.  The little guy promptly walked up her chest and licked her on the chin.  It was love at first sight, and Boots came home to live with us.  He is now neutered and living with 7 women.  Sadly, Boots passed over rainbow bridge this September 2002.  He is greatly missed by us and his rattie friends.

We didn't want Boots to live alone, so we bagan looking for a companion.
With few pet stores in the area, and no breeders found, it was challenging.
We found someone who was finding new homes for some of her rats and brought 2 girls home, Pandora and Phantasia. Pandora is a himalayan and Phantasia was a blue hooded.  Phantasia died earlier this year at an advanced age and she is missed dearly.

While buying supplies at a very small pet store one day, Elyssa found another rat that had to come live with her, Anne.  Anne was rescued from what was most certainly a feeder group of rats. We are saddened that Anne has crossed Rainbow Bridge.

Morphea, the Mom

Morphea and Pandora now live together.

When Petco opened near us, we went to see what they had to offer.
No intention to buy another rat.  But what can you do when you find a pregnant hairless rat in a small glass cage with 2 other males, no nesting material, and no place to hide.  She came home and was given a private cage of her own with plenty of nesting material and an igloo to nest in.  Morphea delivered that very night.  Out of 6 surviving hairless babies, we have 3.  We found homes for 3.  Here are Morphea and the 3 who stayed with us.
Sprite (female), and 2 recently neutered boys.  Claudius and Beltazar.
